The prominent cleric of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH Maimoen Zubair, popularly known as Mbah Moen, passed away while performing hajj in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday.

Secretary General of the country's largest Muslim organization KH Helmy Faishal Zaini expressed deep condolences over the passing of the advisory board (musytasyar) of the Nahdliyin-based organization.

“Boards of NU hereby say innalillahi wainna ilaihi rojiun. We express deep condolences. Indonesia is losing one of its role models, leaders and community protectors,” said in a written statement received by NU Online on Tuesday.

Helmy said that Mbah Moen was a prominent and charismatic ulema and had become the legend of the Indonesian nation.

Following the Tuesday's Mbah Moen' death, Helmy called on Muslims, especially Nahdliyin (NU members) to hold a prayer (gaib prayer) and recite al-fatihah for the al-maghfurlah Mbah Moen.

“May he is placed in the most glorious place beside Allah SWT,” Helmy added.

“Hopefully, we can take the precedent left by KH. Maimoen Zubair as a lesson to face future’s challenges,” Helmy said.

Separately, the Indonesian President Joko Widodo  also offered condolences for the passing of Mbah Moen.
Kyai Maimoen was a charismatic figure who became a reference for all Muslims on fiqh [sharia] values. He was also persistent in emphasizing the importance of unity in diversity,” said Jokowi on Tuesday. (Masdar)
