The National Committee of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) 34th Congress which will be held in Lampung Province, on 23-25 December 2021, has set the theme as the main foothold in the highest deliberation agenda within the NU organization. The theme is: Towards a Century of NU: Building Citizens' Independence for World Peace.

Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the NU 34th Congress, Kiai Imam Aziz, explained the philosophical meaning of the chosen theme. According to him, this congress is very important because NU is at the end of a century.

The theme becomes the NU's big agenda going forward, so that in the upcoming congress, NU needs to reflect on the successes having been achieved so far, for almost a century. In addition, NU will prepare a strategy in welcoming the second century.

NU has achieved many achievements so far. It was stated that NU had finished when discussing the issues of nationality. The same applies to human resources, which are relatively good. NU has also completed the relationship between society and the state, when compared to the Middle East.

"It even shows a fairly good relationship between civil society, NU is there, and the state. It has been arranged with a democratic system based on Indonesian personality, and many more (NU's successes)," Kiai Imam Aziz told NU Online, at a hotel in Central Jakarta, Thursday (4/11/2021).

The independence of NU members (Nahdliyin) in the economic field is one of the things that must be given special attention in welcoming the age of one century. According to Kiai Imam, currently NU members have not yet reached the expected goals.

"Independence is sovereign. For example, in terms of the economy and the management of existing resources. We are very rich but not yet sovereign. This is what must be reflected in the future,” Kiai Imam who is also the chairman of PBNU explained.

He also explained that the theme of world peace was deliberately chosen because now it has become a basic need. This means that the citizens of the world today really need the roles of NU in the global arena.

Kiai Imam admitted that he had just received a visit from the Afghan Ambassador who really hoped that NU would play a role as a 'mentor' for the sustainability of the administration of the country there. He said Afghanistan needed not only moderate Islamic ideas from NU, but also other important things.

"But later also in the next stages such as economy, culture, and assistance in the administration of government and security," he said.

Because at this time, Afghanistan has been reluctant to look at America and Western countries. Instead, they want Indonesia, and NU in it, to play an active role in guiding the management of the state.

"For that reason, we must play a real role, not only moderate Islamic preaching but also others. For example the economy, the Afghan Ambassador invited us (to do) the exchange of products such as palm oil, coal, tea, coffee, and others. In essence, they really hope for NU," Kiai Imam Aziz said.
